TLDs include dot-biz, dot-info, dot-name, dot-pro, dot-museum, dot-aero and dot-coop. Web sites using these TLDs will join the more than 25 million sites in the dot-com, dot-net, and dot-org top level domains.

The new TLDs are somewhat controversial in that most are restricted to "legitimate" registrants. Whereas anyone, from an individual to a corporation or even a family pet can register a dot-com address, applicants for domain names under the new TLDs will be required to submit proof that they are qualified.

"Dot-biz domain names will be offered for registration by businesses for commercial uses only and not for personal use," wrote Clive Flory, president of the JVTeam which won the right to operate the dot-biz TLD. "The TLD shall be restricted to any individual, organization, or entity that desires to advertise their business and/or conduct commercial activities on the Internet." Dot-biz domains will cost $2,000 to register and $150 a year thereafter, a substantial premium to the $35 or less fee to register a dot-com.

The other TLDs will have similar restrictions. Dot-aero is restricted to the aerospace industry, dot-coop is for business cooperatives, dot-pro for professionals such as doctors and attorneys and dot-museum for museums.

Only dot-info, which is expected to provide the most direct competition to dot-com, and dot-name, for individuals wishing to have their own name as an address, will carry no restrictions.

Applicants that weren't chosen were: dot-sex and dot-xxx (adult sites), dot-kids (excluding adult content), dot-africa for sites from Africa, dot-fin and dot-cash for financial services, dot-mall and dot-shop for shopping sites and dot-tel and dot-post for telephone and postal services.

.com - commercial organizations,
.org - non-profit organizations,
.gov - government organizations,
.net - Internet related organizations,
.edu - educational institutions. and
.xx - where xx is a country specific designation (i.e., .uk for Web sites in the United Kingdom)

Registrars have never enforced the above system since any type of organization can purchase a .com, .org, or .net domain. The .gov and .edu domains have been more strictly enforced.

.name -- personal web sites and email addresses; and
.pro -- professionals such as doctors and lawyers
